I) Halloween is celebrated on October 31. This festival is dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the departed.

II) Halloween had its origins in the festival of Samhain among the Celts of ancient Britain and Ireland. In Ireland, people celebrate this festival by setting off the fireworks. They also eat barnbrack (traditional fruitcake), and light bonfires to celebrate.

III) Halloween has come to be associated with a number of wonderful activities. The most common practice is doing harmless pranks. Pople wear masks and costumes for parties and for trick-or-treating. Trick-or-treaters go from house to house with the threat that they will pull a trick if they do not receive a treat, usually candy.

IV) Significance of Pumpkins in Halloween: Halloween would not be considered to be complete without a pumpkin carved with a frightening face. People originally carved turnips instead of pumpkins.

In the 1800s, a lot of people left England and Ireland to go and live in America. They took their Halloween traditions with them, but instead of carving turnips on Halloween, they used pumpkins. There are a lot of pumpkins in America in the autumn. They’re soft and much easier to carve than hard old turnips.
